The ketogenic diet is a form of nutrition where you eat very low in carbohydrates, but consume plenty of fat and a certain amount of protein.
Unlike most other low-carb diets like Paleo or Atkins, the focus here is not on increased protein intake, but primarily on the consumption of fats. The lack of carbohydrates and increased fat intake lead to a change in metabolism and the body enters the so-called ketosis.
How does the keto diet work?
Normally, the body gains its energy mainly from carbohydrates consumed through food. When these energy suppliers are not taken in, the organism switches to another form of energy production: fat stored in the body is converted in the liver into so-called ketone bodies. Instead of carbohydrates, these are now used for energy production and to maintain numerous metabolic processes. This is called ketosis.
On a keto diet, you consume between 60 and 80 percent of your daily calorie needs in the form of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Protein makes up between 10 and 35 percent of the diet. Carbohydrate intake is limited to a maximum of 10 percent. Numerous foods such as grains, legumes, starchy vegetables, sugary fruits, carbohydrate-rich nuts, sweeteners, sugared and many processed products are taboo on the keto diet.

To meet your daily needs for all important nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, and secondary plant compounds, you may need to switch to alternative nutrient sources. It is therefore advisable to pay increased attention to nutrient intake and a balanced diet.
Unpleasant side effects possible
As a side effect of ketosis, unpleasant side effects may occur. Some people who have tried the keto diet report that these appear shortly after starting the diet and last for several days or weeks. Symptoms such as fatigue, nausea and vomiting, gastrointestinal complaints, headaches, and sleep disturbances can occur. In this context, the term keto flu is often used.
